Should Healthcare Providers Use TikTok as a Marketing Tool?

Branding is becoming more and more digital based everyday. Many healthcare providers are using Facebook or Instagram to market their medical practice and/or professional brand, but what about TikTok?

What is TikTok?

TikTok is the largest growing social media network ever, with over 1 billion subscribers.

The iOS or Android based app allows users to create and share short videos that often include trends or informative dialogue.

TikTok’s mission is “to capture and present the world’s creativity, knowledge, and precious life moments, directly from the mobile phone. TikTok enables everyone to be a creator and encourages users to share their passion and creative expression through their videos.”

How is TikTok used on a daily basis?

TikTok is used just like Instagram or Facebook, as a social media platform, with 500 million daily users.

The majority of users get on the app once a day with the average app use per individual in the US is just over an hour.

62% of TikTok subscribers are between the ages of 10 and 29, with an expanding demographic of users aged 35-50.

How does TikTok help Marketers?

In 2020, TikTok launched TikTok for Businesses, which was created as a marketing hub for businesses that provides aid for increasing user engagement.

Within the TikTok for Businesses platform, there are many options that allow businesses to increase their audience, organic and paid. The most used being used is the ability to create and share customized content organically.

This can be extremely helpful for brands to boost their following because 21% of users consistently share content through TikTok with many others sharing videos through other methods.

With creating content, businesses are afforded the opportunity to hone in on an audience and become a part of their daily feed!

There are more options for businesses to increase their engagement, such as ads and Hashtag Challenges, but these options all require a rather large budget.

How does TikTok help Healthcare Businesses or Providers?

TikTok is usually fun and quirky, but there is also a hint of seriousness to the app.

In 2020, the Cleveland Clinic joined TikTok to start advocating the use of wearing masks in the wake of Covid19. One of their first videos had over a million views!

As stated above, many of the TikTok users are between 10 and 29. This is important because many of these users find interest in learning useful information about medicine and healthcare that is not touched on in general education.

Many other healthcare providers and facilities have taken to TikTok to be “credible sources” on topics trending through TikTok.

Tips for Healthcare Providers on TikTok:

The best advice for healthcare providers and anyone on TikTok is to be authentic and genuine when providing accurate information.

Show people a “day in the life” of being a physician. Many students and young users do not know what it is really like or what it takes to be a doctor, so TikTok can be very valuable to that younger audience.

Create content that disproves healthcare myths that many seem to think are true.
